FAQs

What kind of yoga are the classes?

I am trained in Hatha yoga, however I have had a strong pilates practice for many years and include pilates movements that are beneficial to practicing yoga safely. These movements fit seamlessly into a Hatha yoga class, where the aim is to balance the energies of stronger poses with relaxing stretches, with attention placed on the mind/body connection, combining movement with breath, and reseting the nervous system. Sometimes strength and stability of joints and muscles can be overlooked in a traditional yoga practice, so I find combining yoga poses with pilates movements has been the most ideal way to feel the best in our body. Being more flexible is not always better, instead we should aim for length and openness in our body without losing the integrity of our joints.

What should I bring to class?

Please bring a yoga mat and a blanket (just a thin one that can be easily folded will do!) or a flat pilates cushion, and if you have them, one or two yoga bricks. The folded blanket or cushion is useful for correct spinal alignment when lying on the floor, or placing under knees when on hands and knees. The yoga bricks help the floor feel less far away during various poses and can help balance, stability and alignment. I have some spares if you forget but I haven’t got enough for everyone! It is better if your mat isn’t too thick as it can affect your balance and connection/stabilisation to the floor through hands and feet. Padding for knees/hips can always be added with a blanket if you find a thin mat is too hard. It is also a good idea to bring a water bottle and a pair of socks to keep your feet warm during the final relaxation. I will bring all the other props you will need!

What do I wear?

Comfortable, stretchy clothing that you can move freely in, but avoid tops that are too loose as it can be uncomfortable to have them falling over your head in downward dog and forward folds! Something like leggings or trackpants, and a t-shirt or tank top with a light sweater is great and make sure long hair is tied or clipped back so it doesn’t distract you. If you decide to wear socks, the best kind have a grippy sole. Otherwise, practicing barefoot is recommended to increase grounding effect through feet. If the weather is cold also bring a warm jumper or jacket for the final relaxation.

I have some existing injuries, is it ok for me to do yoga?

It depends! Some injuries require rest, so it is best to get advice from a doctor or physiotherapist. If you can safely move around the injury, either contact me before class to discuss or come to class early to talk about how to protect yourself. You can let me know at ANY time if something is feeling uncomfortable and I will give you alternative options. If in doubt about your injury, contact me to have a chat about it and I can help advise you on how to move forward.

I have some health issues. Is yoga safe?

Generally yoga is safe for everyone to do but there will be poses that could be harmful depending on your health condition. If you have any health conditions or concerns you should seek medical advice from your GP before trying yoga. If the GP gives you the all-clear, please state these issues on your health form so I am aware and can modify certain poses if necessary to help keep you safe.

What do I do before class?

Don’t eat a heavy meal before class, as like with any exercise it will feel uncomfortable! A light, healthy snack will keep your energy levels up, however avoid anything too sugary or caffeinated as you don’t to be too stimulated or your blood sugar too high while you’re trying to regulate your nervous system in the class. Arrive 10 mins early to get settled as yoga is best practised when not feeling at all rushed, so please give yourself plenty of time to arrive to get the most out of the class.

I’m not flexible - can I do yoga?

YES!! Yoga is not about being flexible, we want to improve mobility more-so than flexibility. Both mobility and flexibility will improve when you come to class!

Do I have to be spiritual?

Not at all. In fact, my classes are very ‘woo-woo’ light! In my classes we don’t chant or do anything devotional. We begin class with a moment of stillness and a simple breathing exercise, and enjoy a 5 minute relaxation at the end. I think it’s very important to respect that not everyone has the same beliefs and values and I would never push any kind of spiritual practice on anyone.
